15 November 2011- The Philippine Economic Society focused on the Aquino administration’s economic centerpiece initiative, the Philippine Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Program, during its 49th Annual Meeting which was themed “Shifting to High Gear for Investment-led Growth.”

Peter Leslie Wallace, President and Founder of the Wallace Business Forum, speaking as the moderator on the plenary session on PPPs, said that public-private partnership is a good way to fund infrastructure projects that will stimulate the growth of the country’s economy.

Cosette V. Canilao, Executive Director of the PPP Center provided the keynote presentation on the PPP Agenda and program updates. She stated that the government has laid down the essential foundation for fruitful partnerships and has been building up on it for viable PPP projects.

The PPP Center also announced during the event that more PPP projects are expected to be in the pipeline as various projects have recently been approved for pre-investment financing through the Projects Development and Monitoring Facility (PDMF).

Projects approved for PDMF funding are the Vaccine Self-Sufficiency Project Phase II, PPP for School Infrastructure Project (1st batch), Philippine Orthopedic Center Modernization Project, Laguindingan Airport Development Project, Common Automatic Fare Collection System, Mactan Cebu International Airport New Passenger Terminal Building, and New Bohol (Panglao) Airport Development Project.

Department of Finance (DOF) Undersecretary John Philip Sevilla, who represents the DOF in the inter-agency PDMF Board, underlined the government’s efforts at ensuring the quality of projects put on stream. “We are trying to get the best deals that the government can have,” he said.

The annual meeting was participated by some 500 guests and members of the Philippine Economic Society last November 11, 2011 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Assembly Hall. Other panelists present were Aziz Haydarov, Country Economist for the Philippines and Norman LaRoque, Senior Education Specialist, both from the Asian Development Bank.
