The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) set for August 22 this year the prequalification bidding for the P60 billion Light Rail Transit 1 Cavite Extension project.

DOTC on its website said interested parties can submit prequalification documents for the public-private partnership (PPP) project approved by the National Economic and Development Authority board last March.

The extension will add almost 12 kilometers to the present 21-km line running from Roosevelt to Baclaran. Eight passenger stations, with a provision for two additional stations, will be placed between Baclaran in Parañaque and Bacoor, Cavite.

The planned stations are the Redemptorist Station on Redemptorist Road near Roxas Blvd.; MIA Station near the Coastal Mall in Roxas Blvd.; Asia World Station near Asia World Development on Roxas Blvd.; Ninoy Aquino Station on the east side of Ninoy Aquino Bridge that crosses the Parañaque River; Dr. Santos Station, south of Dr. Santos Rd.; Las Piñas Station, east of Quirino Ave. and south of Las Piñas River; Zapote Station, north of the Alabang-Zapote flyover; and Niyog Station, south of the Niyog Rd. bypass and Aguinaldo Highway intersection.

The two provisional stations are in Manuyo Uno in Las Piñas, and Talaba in Cavite.

Partial operations are expected in the second to third quarter of 2015, while full operations are expected in the second half of 2017.

The project is expected to increase the ridership of LRT Line 1 to 700,000 passengers a day from the current 500,000.
