The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) earlier awarded International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) a 25-year concession contract to develop and operate the port facility.

The city mayor has been at the forefront of the campaign to redevelop or privatize the port complex into a modern, efficient, and premier gateway for the entire Western Visayas.
