Construction of the new terminal of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport is progressing well with the first concrete pouring today.
The first batch of concrete mix was poured into the structure six months after work started on the second terminal, said GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC) head of corporate affairs Estee Marie Plunket.
The structure will have a total floor area of 65,865 square meters with three floors – ground floor for arrivals, mezzanine level, and third floor for departures.
Under its 25-year concession contract to manage and upgrade the airport terminal, GMCAC was supposed to start construction of Terminal 2 in January this year and deliver by February 2018.
The company, however, broke ground five months off its target in June 29 with the delay in the replication project for the Air Force base, which was estimated to take 300 days.
Target completion of Terminal 2 is set for the summer of 2018 instead of February 2018.
Once completed, the new terminal will triple the current carrying capacity of the airport to 12.5 million passengers a year from its current 4.5 million.
The P17.5 billion Mactan airport upgrading project was the first public-private partnership (PPP) contract awarded in the country.
