The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), recently issued its Notice of Award (NOA) to Optimal Infrastructure Development Inc., a subsidiary of San Miquel Corp. for the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Expressway Project (NAIA Ex). SMC recently seized the deal to build and operate the 7.5-kilometer elevated Ninoy Aquino International Airport Expressway.

SMC will hand over to government the 11 Billion pesos up-front payment it offered in their bid within 30 days from May 6, 2013, the issuance of the NOA. SMC will operate the airport toll road for a period of 30 years, including the 36 months given for the completion of the detail design and construction of the project.

The signing of the project is slated for June 2013, while the target construction period will be from the December 2013 to August 2015.

The NAIA Expressway project is a strategic part of the envisioned Metro Manila Urban Expressway System to be built around a network of expressways serving Metro Manila. The airport toll road will link two major expressways serving as the north-south backbone of the eastern and western sections of Metro Manila, and support the development of the PAGCOR Entertainment City located along the Manila Bay reclamation area. It will well connect all three terminals of the NAIA Complex and ease the flow of traffic to and from the airport.
